We called the project „Transilvania”, by the name of the construction company who develops it, with a history of over 10 years. Since the first analysis of a neighboring plot of the multi-story public housing blocks that were built in the 1980’s on Dorobantilor street in Cluj, the real estate framework and building manner in the area has evolved. Our solution was to reorganize the area as a whole, rather than separate and divide properties, which was difficult and undesirable in the context of large scale public housing. In order to create a dialog between the old and the new suggested layout, a composition of private and public spaces was designed. It takes into account the concern to efficiently occupy and use the plot, and the circulation dynamics of the area. We adopted a concept that was based on the relation between structure and esthetic expression for two distinct projects that have two different investors, who understood the benefits of the collaboration. The result is this first completed project which will be followed by two others. One of them is already under construction. The volume of the building is compact and expands towards the back of the plot; it grows on top of the underground parking. The parking lot from the ground level dictated the site development. The scale of the volume is decreased by the play of cantilevering loggias and balconies, and by the neighbouring building which responds in an architectural dialog. The building offers 110 medium-sized apartments, and 10 paired penthouses with spectacular views along the Somes valley, city center and East side. Our vision was of echoing „Corbusian” housing units and their reverberation on their surroundings.
